Who doesn’t love apple crumble! I love it and I will eat an apple crumble as often as I can on a Sunday!
I wanted to make an baby friendly apple crumble oatmeal healthy recipe that my son could eat that wasn’t full of sugar. So I wanted to create a healthy dessert.
I also wondered if that existed, and what I mean by that is would it taste any good! I think this version is tasty and would easily make a delicious dessert any day of the week for a baby apple crumble or a toddler apple crumble, as it is such a basic recipe. Simple recipes are always the best! It is easy to make the apple crumble recipe vegan by switching out 1 ingredient, see below how.
Baby Apple Crumble Recipe
I have traditionally used Bramley apples for the apple crumble as I feel these apples are the best for an apple crumble by far.
They taste sweeter than eating apples and when cooked have the most perfect consistency, in my opinion.
You could use a usual eating apple for the this recipe, However they won’t break down as much as the Bramley apples do.
So, if you prefer a bite to your apple crumble eating apples will be for you. Or you could use a combination of the two, which would make a delicious apple crumble for baby.
When Can I Introduce Apple To My Baby?

The good thing with oats is that they are naturally rough and full of texture so instead of using flour and butter, oats and butter end up with a similar consistency.
I have of course used unsalted butter as I do not use salted butter in recipes for my son. The crumbly texture has worked out really well. I’m really pleased with it.

Ingredient information
Bramley apple - As mentioned, Bramley apple works the best in my opinion for an apple crumble. Two fresh apples would work well if you like a bite to your crumble. Great for little hands with a sweet tooth.
Oats - To make this gluten free you could use gluten free rolled oats (quick oats) to be sure for gluten free babies. You could use oat flour or almond flour for a smooth topping. Or you could blitz up the oats especially if you are using steel cut oats to make a fine powder, using a food processor.
Unsalted butter - I always have unsalted butter in my fridge for cooking. The best to use for toddlers and babies. For a dairy free alternative you could use coconut oil.
Ground nutmeg - A little bit of nutmeg adds a kick to this recipe that makes this dish autumnal. You could add in a teaspoon of chia seeds too if you wish.
Serving suggestion
I serve this to my son with some natural Greek style yogurt. But you could serve with crème fraiche, or even drizzle with some peanut butter as well.
For babies 12 months and over you could drizzle with a little maple syrup, and serve alongside a healthy apple crisp.
Other great meal ideas before the tender apples could be a beef stew, chicken curry or cottage pie.
Storage instructions
Great news, this can be frozen. So if you did want to make a batch of the oaty apple oat crumble, you absolutely can.
The oaty apple oat crumble can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Be sure to label the airtight container with the item and date.
You can store the oaty apple oat crumble in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
If you wanted to reheat the oaty apple oat crumble from frozen, you will need to place the crumble in the fridge in an airtight container overnight to thaw.
Pre heat the oven to 180C/350F, and heat for 20 minutes.
Once defrosted you will not be able to re freeze.
Equipment Used to Help With This Recipe
Mixing bowl - I like to use a stainless steel mixing bowl - they are usually lightweight and easy to clean.
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Ovenproof dish - The design of this ovenproof dish allows for self-basting and will keep the food moist. It also has a non-stick coating, so is easy to clean!
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Recipe | Simple Apple Oat Crumble Recipe For Baby Led Weaning
Makes 2 Portions
1 Bramley apple
25g unsalted butter (at room temperature)
50g rolled oats
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Instructions
Start by pre heating the oven to 180C or 350F.
Peel and core the apple and chop into slices.
Place the apple in a saucepan with a splash of water and the nutmeg, cover and heat on a medium to low heat for 10 minutes.
Chop the butter into small pieces, and combine with the rolled oats in a mixing bowl using your hands, until a crumbly mixture is formed, set aside.
Once the apples are cooked, place in an ovenproof dish, sprinkle the crumble mixture on top, evenly and place in the pre heated oven for 20 minutes.
Portion into a small bowl, leave to cool before serving to your baby.
