Hot Cross Buns In A Cup! Easter Snacks For Kids!

So delicious, sweet with a slight spicy taste! Who doesn’t love hot cross bun recipes.

Even as a recipe creator, I struggle to get my son to drink milk. He was 100% breastfed for 14 months. After this time the transition to cow’s milk has been really difficult. He gags and refuses milk to this day, so I try to offer everyday and make sure he has his recommended calcium intake each day.

He loves cows milk in porridge, Weetabix and in foods. He also loves Greek yogurt so this is a staple in his diet.

I will try anything to get him to try and drink milk. This milkshake he will drink and he loves!

The sweetness and fruitiness of this milkshake is so tasty and works perfectly against the creaminess of the milk, perfect for Good Friday on this special occasion.

When Can Babies Drink Milk as a Beverage?

As a general guideline, babies can start drinking whole cow's milk as a main drink once they reach their first birthday. Before the age of one, it is recommended to feed babies breast milk or formula as their primary source of nutrition. Introducing cow's milk too early can lead to issues such as iron deficiency and digestive problems.

After your baby turns one, you can gradually transition from formula or breast milk to whole cow's milk. It's important to avoid giving low-fat or skim milk to children under two years old because they need the extra fat for brain development.

Is A Milk Smoothie OK For My Baby for Baby-Led Weaning?

A milk smoothie can be easy healthy recipes, suitable for babies depending on their age and dietary needs. It is essential to ensure that the milk used is appropriate for your baby's age (breast milk, formula, or whole cow's milk after one year old).

Introducing new foods should always be done cautiously to monitor for any potential allergies or intolerances, especially from 6 months old.

So if your little one still refuses cow’s milk, give this a go! Great for fussy eating toddlers and family meals too.

What Cup To Use From 6 Months Old?

When choosing a cup for a baby aged 6 months and older, it's essential to consider their developmental stage and readiness to transition from a bottle or breast. A recommended option is a soft-spouted sippy cup orstraw cup. These cups typically have handles for easy gripping and a soft spout that is gentle on the baby's gums.

It's important to look for a cup that is BPA-free and easy to clean. Some cups come with removable valves to control the flow of liquid, which can be helpful as babies learn to drink from a sippy cup. Additionally, opt for a cup that is spill-proof to minimise messes during the learning process.

Remember, every baby is unique, so it may take some trial and error to find the best cup that works for your little one. Patience and consistency are key as babies adjust to using a cup instead of a bottle.

    Ingredient information

Whole milk - I have used whole milk, as this is what I am using for my son at the moment. You can use your plant based fortified milk of choice to make this plant based.

Easy peeler - I have used an easy peeler as I usually have these in the fruit bowl. You can use a small orange if you have one. Or half a large orange.

Mixed spice - This is the taste of a hot cross bun and it works so well in this drink.

Raisins - Adds texture and sweetness to the drink. They can be left out if needed as they can leave some bits behind.

Cinnamon - I have used for garnish to make the criss cross.

    Serving suggestion

This is a great Easter Day snack! This can be served on its own, or alongside healthy easy recipes such as finger foods: Oaty bar, apple fritter, carrot cake muffin or with some orange segments!

There is enough to go around in this recipe so may be enough for seconds!

    Storage instructions

You can leave this in the fridge in a jug with a lid, cling film (plastic wrap) or cup with a lid for up to 1-2 days. It is best drank on the day, if you do leave in the fridge it will need a good stir before drinking.

You could freeze in ice cube trays and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Leave the smoothie at room temperature or a couple of minutes before freezing.

You can easily defrost the smoothie in the fridge overnight.

Once defrosted you will not be able to re freeze.

Equipment Used To Help With This Recipe

Nutri bullet - I have found a blender to be an invaluable tool in the preparation of many of my baby led weaning recipes.

Ice cube tray - I found that these large ice cube silicone moulds were ideal for freezing individual baby portions.
