When Can I Serve Apples For My Baby?
You can start serving apples to your baby around 6 to 8 months of age. At this stage, babies can typically handle pureed or mashed apple, which can be a good source of essential nutrients like Vitamin C and fibre. It is important to peel and cook the apples until they are soft to avoid any choking hazards.
Remember to introduce new foods one at a time to watch for any potential allergic reactions. As your baby grows older and develops more teeth, you can gradually offer small, soft apple slices for them to chew on.
Ingredient information
Puff pastry - I have used a ready rolled puff pastry that is dairy free/vegan. This is great to use for convenience and perfect to use for this recipe, especially if you are in a hurry.
Bramley apples - I like to use Bramley apples for this recipe, especially in apple season as they cook down to a lovely consistency, perfect for young babies. You could use any apple you have, just make sure when cooked they are soft.
Sweet cinnamon - I have used sweet cinnamon as this is so tasty and works perfectly with apples. You could use regular cinnamon if you wish.
Egg - I have used an egg for the egg wash, you could use an unsalted plant based butter or coconut oil to make the recipe vegan.
Serving suggestion
The apple turnovers are great finger foods served with plain Greek style yogurt sprinkled with a little cinnamon or nutmeg. Great for baby snacks with no added sugar.
You could serve with fresh fruit such as blueberries, strawberries and blackberries.

Storage instructions
The apple turnovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.
If you wanted to freeze the turnovers, you will need to make sure that the turnovers have cooled down before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.
To defrost the turnovers, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted, before re heating.
To reheat, place the turnovers in a oven proof dish and reheat 180C/350F for 4-5 minutes. They can be eaten at room temperature.
Once the turnovers have been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Baking sheet - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Recipe | Puff Pastry Baked Apple Turnover For Babies & Toddler
Ingredients
Makes 6 apple turnovers
320g ready rolled puff pastry sheet
230g Bramley apples (uncooked weight)
1/4 teaspoon sweet ground cinnamon
1 egg, beaten
Instructions
Start by preheating your oven to a medium heat of 180C or 350F. You will need a large baking tray.
Cook the apples with the sweet cinnamon and a splash of water in a medium saucepan on a medium-low heat for 10 minutes or so until they are cooked and soft.
Once the apples are cooked, set aside and leave to cool for a few minutes.
Unroll the puff pastry onto your baking sheet and leave the pastry on the parchment paper.
Cut the pastry in half length ways using a sharp knife, and then into 2 sections to make 6 squares.
Using a 1-2 teaspoons of the apple filling, place in one corner of the pastry and repeat for the other 5 pastry squares.
Beat the egg in a small bowl if you haven’t done so.
Using pastry brush or your fingers, take the beaten egg and egg wash the 4 sides of each square, fold over one corner to the other corner.
Using a fork press down the 2 open sides until stuck together. Repeat for all the turnovers.
Finally, egg wash the tops of the turnovers. Pop in the oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Leave to cool before serving to your baby.
Recipe notes
You could use fresh pears, raspberries or rhubarb if you prefer instead of using apples.
Most store bought pastry is vegan/dairy free. If you wanted to make the full recipe vegan/dairy free you could use a vegan/dairy free butter to egg wash the sides and tops of the turnovers.
To make this easy recipe gluten-free you could use a gluten-free puff pastry.
