Ingredient information
Onion - I have used a red onion but you could use any onion you have for this recipe, i just tend to buy red onions so that is what I am using at the moment.
Garlic - I have used fresh garlic but you could use garlic granules or garlic powder. There’s a garlic pepper jar in the supermarket that is so delicious and would save you adding the black pepper too.
Beef - I have used beef mince or ground beef, whichever you prefer to say. The recipe would work with chicken mince or even a mixture of both beef mince and pork mince.
Paprika - I love adding this spice into a tomato based sauce especially with a bolognaise style sauce. Try it.
Oregano - I love this dried herb to have in the cupboard, I use the herb so often i buy the big container of it.
Basil - Another delicious dried herb that is great as an alternative to fresh basil in pasta sauces such as this one.
Passata - Nothing beats a smooth tomato based pasta sauce, which is why I have used passata. You could use 2 tins of chopped tomatoes if you prefer though.
Lasagne - I have used dry pasta sheets for the cannelloni as they are more readily available in the supermarkets, plus they are easier to fill with the meat filling. If you wanted to use cannelloni tubes/cannelloni shells/pasta tubes, you absolutely can. Or you can use fresh pasta sheets if you wish.
Cheese - I have used cheddar cheese and a little grated mozzarella works so well on top of a lasagne style dish.
Serving suggestion
The beef cannelloni recipe would be great served with tender stem broccoli, cooked carrots and peas.
You could serve the bolognaise cannelloni on its own as a complete meal too.
Other recipes you may like: Spag bol, Cottage pie or Beef stew.
Storage instructions
The cannelloni bolognaise can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.
If you wanted to freeze the pasta you will need to make sure that the pasta has cooled down to room temperature before transferring to either a freezer bag (carefully) or airtight container. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container. If freezing in the baking dish, cool down to room temperature, wrap the dish with plastic wrap, followed by tin foil.
To defrost the pasta, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that it is fully defrosted, before re heating.
To reheat, place the defrosted pasta in a saucepan and reheat on a medium heat for 5-8 minutes. You can add in a splash of water if the pasta sauce needs loosening.
Once the pasta has been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or re freeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Baking dish - A square rust-resistant non-stick baking tin - very versatile and can be used for your cake bakes or roasting meat and veg!
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
