5 Ingredient: Egg Free, Healthy Carrot Fritters
Table of Contents
Carrots are a fantastic choice for baby-led weaning, as they are not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients. Carrots provide essential minerals like potassium and calcium, helping to support strong bones and muscle development. Their naturally sweet taste and smooth texture make them a perfect food for little ones to grasp and explore independently. Whether steamed, grated, or pureed, carrots offer a world of culinary exploration for babies, making them an ideal addition to their introduction to solid foods.
Gram flour is a wonderful alternative to regular flour, particularly for babies who follow a gluten-free diet. Made from ground chickpeas, gram flour offers lots of nutritional benefits for your little one. Bursting with essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre, gram flour aids in healthy digestion and supports overall growth and development in babies. Not only is gram flour gluten-free, but it also possesses a mild, nutty flavour, making it a versatile ingredient for various recipes. From pancakes and muffins to savoury fritters and crepes, gram flour opens up a world of possibilities, enabling your gluten-free baby to enjoy a diverse array of delicious and nutritious meals.
Flaxseed and water have emerged as a popular and viable substitute for eggs in various culinary creations. This combination, known as a flax egg, is a perfect solution for those following a vegan diet or facing egg allergies. By simply mixing milled flaxseed with water, you can achieve a gooey and gelatinous texture that mimics the binding properties of eggs. Not only does this versatile substitution serve as a binder in baking recipes, but it also adds a nutty flavour (perfect combination with the gram flour) and a dose of omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed and water offer a healthy, plant-based alternative that seamlessly transitions into different recipes, allowing everyone to enjoy delicious and inclusive dishes without compromise.
Fritters are an excellent choice for baby led weaning as they make for a wonderful finger food option. First and foremost, fritters are soft and easy to chew, which is crucial for babies who are just starting to explore solid foods. The texture allows them to practice their chewing skills without the risk of choking. Additionally, fritters can be packed with nutritious ingredients like vegetables, fruit, and even proteins, providing a balanced meal for your little one. They are also versatile, as you can customise them to suit your baby's taste preferences. Fritters are not only tasty but also offer a great opportunity for babies to develop their fine motor skills by picking them up and self-feeding. With their delicious taste and convenient finger-friendly shape, fritters are undoubtedly a fantastic option for baby led weaning.
Introducing solid foods to your growing baby's diet can be both exciting and daunting. However, with my delightful carrot fritter recipe, you can embark on this journey with confidence. Packed with essential nutrients, these fritters introduce the taste of vegetables in a fun and delicious way. Ingredient information
Carrots - Perfect for baby led weaning, using the finest grater works best for this recipe.
Flaxseed - Great to use with water as an egg substitute. See below how to do this.
Gram flour (chickpea flour) - You can use plain flour too, But this recipe is great with chickpea flour. Great if your little one is gluten free.
Olive oil - A drizzle in the pan to fry the fritters, you could use unsalted butter too.
Black pepper - You can leave this out, I use a little to season the carrot fritters.
Serving suggestion
You could serve the carrot fritters, alongside a Orzotto recipe or you could serve with a Dal recipe. Alternatively you can serve the carrot fritters on their own as part of a lunch recipe or as a snack recipe on the go.
Storage instructions
The carrot fritters once cooled, can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. If you wanted to reheat the carrot fritters, you will only be able to reheat once from the fridge. I would suggest heating them up in the oven, at 180 degrees, for 15 minutes. Leave to cool before serving to your baby.
To store in the freezer, leave the fritters to cool and store in an airtight container or in airtight freezer bags. They can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Frying pan - I love the non-stick surface of this particular frying pan and it’s suitable for all types of hob.
Large mixing bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
