I am taking the classic spaghetti bolognaise or spaghetti bolognese and making it a dairy-free vegan version that is just as tasty as if it were meat!
This recipe has it all! The veggies, the protein and the yumminess which are all great options! A great way for baby trying a bolognaise for the first time.
I love it when I get to add lots of veggies into a sauce, I use them for the flavour but I’m also aware that my son needs them! So it is a win win for all!
This is such a good recipe when you have no idea what to make! You can buy the vegan mince and freeze it and have it as a staple so that you aways have it!
You can serve this with vegan cheese or if you just want a meat free meal you can serve with cheddar cheese!
If you’re looking to make this gluten free, some meat free minces are gluten free, you will just need to check the label. The Meat Free Farm and the Beyond mince is Vegan and gluten free, whilst the Quorn mince is vegetarian and gluten free but not vegan! Checking the labels is key!

Vegan Mince Meat
Vegan mince meat for babies following Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) is a nutritious option for introducing solid foods to your little one. Packed with plant-based proteins, vitamins, and minerals, vegan mince meat offers a suitable alternative to traditional meat-based products.
When preparing vegan mince meat for baby-led weaning, ensure the texture is appropriate for your baby's chewing abilities by finely chopping or mashing the ingredients.
Seasonings should be kept mild to avoid overwhelming your baby's palate. Introducing vegan mince meat early on can help cultivate a diverse and balanced diet for your baby as they continue their food exploration journey.
Ingredient information
Olive oil - I have used olive oil as this is vegan plus it’s a healthy option versus vegetable or sunflower oil.
Onion - An onion is a great base for a sauce and is a staple in our home.
Celery - I use celery for flavour, be sure to chop up small and a similar size to the onion and carrot.
Carrot - I use carrot for flavour too, but also to get in some extra veggies!!
Vegan mince - You can use your vegan mince of choice. The Beyond mince I would highly recommend or the Meatless Farm mince.
Plum tomatoes - I like to use plum tomatoes every so often as they are sometimes more flavourful than the tinned chopped tomatoes for a tomato sauce! You could blitz in a food processor to make a smoother sauce.
Oregano - I love the taste of oregano in pasta dishes! So I had to add some! You could use Italian herbs if you prefer, and leave out the sage and thyme.
Sage - I have added some sage as I feel this goes so well with any meat!
Thyme - Thyme is another favourite! And goes so well with the other dried herbs.
Tomato paste - Adds depth and flavour to the bolognaise!
Balsamic vinegar - I always add a touch of balsamic vinegar to bolognaise dishes as it adds such a nice flavour! Try it!
Serving suggestion
A great obvious serving suggestion with the bolognaise is spaghetti! I have decided to serve with orzo pasta!
Orzo pasta is great if you are trying to get your baby used to lumpy textures! A great ingredient for weaning! I have also served with some grated vegan cheese which is optional, you can serve with cheddar cheese if you like!
You could serve with sweet potatoes too, you can bake them, or cut into wedges to make sweet potato wedges.
Other vegan dinner recipes you may like: Black eye peas curry, Dal or 5 bean chilli.
Storage instructions
The bolognaise can be kept in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Or you can store in airtight containers in the freezer for up to 3 months. Its best to label the freezer bag and airtight container with the item and the date.
To defrost the bolognaise, thaw in the fridge overnight, once fully defrosted, you can reheat the bolognaise.
To reheat the bolognaise, preheat your oven to 180C/350F and reheat for up to 20-25 minutes. You can also re heat on the hob on a medium heat until piping hot.
Once thawed and reheated you will not be able to refreeze and store.
