Bramley apples are a fantastic ingredient for baby-led weaning recipes due to their soft texture and natural sweetness when cooked. Especially for this apple and blueberry crumble recipe.
You can create a variety of sweet treats, such as apple purees, or baked goods that are perfect for little ones to explore.
You should make this apple and blueberry crumble. This easy dessert recipe combines the tartness of Bramley apples with the sweetness of blueberries, providing a wholesome dessert that's easy for babies to grasp and enjoy.
Not forgetting it is a great recipe for the whole family too.
The buttery crumble topping adds a lovely texture while remaining soft enough for tiny hands, making it a great treat for your baby to savour while they learn to feed themselves.
Bramley Apple Substitute
If Bramley apples are unavailable for your apple and blueberry crumble, you can substitute them with several different kind of apples that will still provide a delicious flavour and texture.
Apples such as Granny Smith apples or Cox apples are excellent choices, as they offer a balance of sweetness plus they are tart apples which are similar to Bramleys.
If you prefer a sweeter crumble, try gala apples or pink lady apples, which will make for a softer texture when baked.
For those seeking a unique twist, consider using ripe pears; they will add a lovely sweetness and gentle flavour that complements the blueberries beautifully.
Ingredient information
Fresh apples - I have used bramley apples, the flavour of the sweet apples are so delicious and tart perfect for an apple crumble recipe or any crumble recipe. You can use pretty much any type of apple for the recipe though.
Juicy blueberries - I have used blueberries as well as the bramley apples, feel free to use other fruit such as strawberries, blackberries or plums.
Cinnamon - I have used cinnamon as a little added sweetness and extra flavour. Plus cinnamon is a great pairing with fruit such as apples.
Nutmeg - A touch of nutmeg is so delicious within this recipe. You can leave this ingredient out if you prefer.
Almond flour - I have used almond flour to add extra flavour and this is great to add when you are not adding the usual ingredient that is sugar.
Flour - I have used a little all purpose flour with the almond flour for texture against the almond flour and unsalted butter. You can use gluten-free flour to make the recipe gluten-free.
Unsalted butter - I have used unsalted butter, you could use a plant based unsalted butter if you wish to make the recipe vegan and dairy free.
Serving suggestion
The delicious apple crumble would be great served with a dollop of plain Greek yogurt. If you had a little of the apple and blueberry juices left you can add a little extra on top.
You can of course serve with double cream or whipped cream.
Other fruity desserts you may like: Strawberry jelly, Rice pudding or Sweet cheese pudding.

Equipment used to help with this recipe
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
