Are Breadsticks a Good Snack For Babies

Breadsticks can be a good snack for babies, provided they are age-appropriate and given with supervision.

For babies who have started on solids and are practising self-feeding, a plain breadstick and cheese snack can offer a convenient finger food that encourages fine motor skills and chewing.

It is important to choose breadsticks without added salt, sugar, or strong flavours or seed oils, and to ensure they are soft enough to prevent choking hazards. Check your babies readiness.

Always introduce breadsticks gradually and observe your baby’s ability to handle them safely, adapting texture and size as needed.

    Are Breadsticks a Choking Hazard

Breadsticks can pose a choking hazard for babies practising baby-led weaning if not prepared and presented appropriately. They can be great for teething gums.

They are often hard and brittle, which can make them difficult for little ones to chew safely.

To reduce the risk, breadsticks should be softened, for example by soaking in soup or a dip, and broken into manageable size pieces that are easy for babies to hold and chew.

Always supervise your baby closely when offering breadsticks or any finger foods, and introduce new textures cautiously to ensure safe eating experiences.

    Ingredient information

Cheese - I have used a mature cheddar cheese for this recipe. Other cheeses that are ok for baby from 6 months old are Red Leicester cheese, Double Gloucester cheese or Lancashire cheese.

Breadsticks - I have used breadsticks with minimal ingredients in them that just use olive oil in them without the extra seed oils. If you wanted you could make your own breadsticks instead. You could also use pizza dough and use a pizza cutter to cut into strips for another yummy alternative.

    Serving suggestion

The breadsticks would be great served with a dip such as a yogurt, cream cheese and lemon dip, houmous or an aubergine dip as well as the cheese if you are going out on a picnic or for a school lunchbox.

You could also serve the breadsticks with a side of veggie sticks or mozzarella sticks and a great finger food style picky lunch.

Slow cooking chicken in a slow cooker can be a great main accompaniment for the bread sticks.

Other toddler recipes you may like: White bread recipe, rice cakes, Naan bread or 4 ingredient banana nut bread.

    Storage instructions

This bread sticks will last up to 5 days in an airtight container or airtight food bag, in a cool kitchen at room temperature.

The cheese can be kept in the fridge the same way in an airtight container or sealed tight food bags for up to 5 days.

If you are going to take this out as a snack it is recommended that you use a cool bag with ice blocks to keep the cheese from over heating.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
