    I understand making bread can be quite daunting! I completely get it! It really can be!

    However I have found that this recipe works every time! And I honestly believe it is simple!

    Bread flour is relatively inexpensive too, and it can do two loaves with this recipe so a win-win!

    The smell in your kitchen when making this bread will be incredible! Who doesn’t love the smell of proving bread.

    I do not think this recipe is too time-consuming, but bear in mind that you will need 4-5 hours of your day from start to finish when making this bread! But how satisfying at the end of it to know that you have made bread for the week! That’s if it lasts that long however!

    Do not be afraid of kneading either, it’s a fun therapeutic process that is fun, plus with this recipe you do not have to knead for long!

    The crust on this bread isn’t too crusty, so it is great for little gums! It’s a lovely all round loaf!

    What Kind Of Bread Is Ok For BLW?

    For Baby-Led Weaning (BLW), it is recommended to offer babies plain bread as one of the first finger foods from 6 months of age as the type of bread served. Opt for bread without added sugars or large seeds, as they could be a choking hazard. Whole grains are a great option too.

    Toast strips or small pieces of soft bread are suitable options for babies practicing BLW.

    Always ensure that the bread is cut into manageable sizes to prevent choking incidents. It is essential to supervise the baby closely while they are eating to ensure a safe and positive feeding experience.

    Ingredient information

    Strong white bread flour - This is the flour you will need for this bread recipe! I have always used this flour for white bread. The recipe does not work too well with wholemeal bread flour.

    Fast action dried yeast - I find the fast action dry yeast best for bread recipes.

    Warm water - warm water is best to activate the yeast. I do not use a sweetener to activate the yeast as this recipe works great without.

    Olive oil - I use olive oil to oil the bowl so that the dough doesn’t stick too much. You will only need a little bit.

    Serving suggestion

    I love bread with butter! But obviously you can serve this bread with anything you like and know that your little ones will be eating home made bread without any added extras in it!

    Cheese on toast is always a winner, and I love that you can cut the bread thinly or thickly depending on what you want to use the bread for! perfect for baby’s mouth.

    Storage instructions

    This bread will last up to 5 days in a bread bin, airtight container or airtight food bag, in a cool kitchen at room temperature.

    If your kitchen gets too hot I would wrap the bread in foil and pop in the fridge for storage.

    You can freeze the loaf as well, so if you double the ingredients and make 2 loaves you can freeze a loaf for the next week.

    Once the bread has been frozen it is suggested that you do not re freeze the bread.

    Equipment used to help with this recipe

    Airtight container - I love the non-stick surface of this particular frying pan and it’s suitable for all types of hob.

    Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.

    Baking tray - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.

    Makes 1 large loaf

    • 500g strong white bread flour

    • 1 7g sachet fast action dried yeast

    • 330ml warm water

    • Olive oil

    Instructions

    1. Start by mixing the yeast and warm water in a bowl and whisk with a fork. Leave to stand for a few minutes.

    2. With a large mixing bowl, tip in the flour followed by the yeast and water. Mix using a fork or spoon and finish off by using your hands until combined and shape into a ball. The dough should feel warm, that’s good as the yeast is working.

    3. Flour a work surface and place the ball on the floured surface.

    4. Begin to knead the dough for 5 minutes. Stretching the dough out and back again, using the base of your hands, and repeat.

    5. Once kneaded. Tuck under any edges to make a ball.

    6. Give the bowl a clean and oil the bowl using a piece of kitchen roll and a touch of oil.

    7. Place the kneaded ball into the bowl, cover using a tea towel and place in a warm place for an hour to prove.

    8. After an hour, the dough should have at least doubled in size.

    9. Knock the air out of the dough, using your fist, and place on a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes.

    10. Tuck in the edges to make a smooth round ball.

    11. Transfer to a lined lightly floured baking tray, and cover with a tea towel.

    12. Place in the same warm place and prove for another hour.

    13. Pre heat your oven to 200 degrees. When you have 10 minutes to go proving.

    14. Score the dough using a sharp knife in a criss cross pattern (like noughts and crosses)

    15. Sprinkle the dough ball with some more of the flour on top.

    16. Place the baking tray in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. All ovens are different, when nearing the end of cooking, check that the bread is golden brown and not over baked.

    17. You may need to turn the bread if you see one side browning more than the other.

    18. After 30 minutes, check that the bread is cooked by knocking the bottom of the bread. If it sounds hollow the bread is ready!

    Recipe notes

    This is tried and tested with strong white bread flour only, it will not work with wholemeal flour.

    The recipe is deliciously dairy free and vegan too!

    This baby bread recipe would be great served as a slice of bread which is untoasted bread served with peanut butter or seed butter to test out allergens.
