Fish pie for baby is an excellent choice for baby led weaning due to its rich blend of flavours and nutritious ingredients to make a delicious recipe. A classic dish for your baby to enjoy.
Packed with various types of fish, such as cod or salmon, it provides essential omega-3 fatty acids crucial for brain development.
The creamy sauce, made with milk, adds a velvety texture that is easy for little ones to handle and enjoy.
Including vegetables like peas and sweetcorn not only enhances the nutritional value but also introduces babies to different textures and tastes.
With its soft consistency and comforting warmth, fish pie encourages independent eating while ensuring your child is receiving a balanced meal.
How To Serve Fish To a 6 Month Old?
When serving fish to a 6-month-old, it's essential to choose a mild, low-mercury variety, such as salmon or cod.
Ensure the fish is thoroughly cooked and flaked into small, manageable pieces to prevent choking.
You can steam or bake the fish without added salt or spices to retain its natural flavour. It's recommended to serve the fish alongside soft, steamed vegetables or mashed potatoes for a well-rounded meal, which is why this fish pie recipe is perfect for baby.
Always monitor your baby as they try new textures and be aware of any potential allergies, introducing fish early on while adhering to paediatric guidelines.
Ingredient information
,Fish pie mix - The frozen section of the supermarket have so many gems like this fish pie mix, frozen veggies, frozen herbs and much more. This is great to store in the freezer until needed. You can just use fresh fish such as white fish such as cod if you wanted to.
Butter - I have used unsalted butter for this recipe but you can use a dairy free alternative or even olive oil for dairy free babies.
Flour - I used self raising flour for this recipe as that is all that I had for the recipe. You can use plain flour if that is what you have, the recipe will work with either.
Milk - I have used whole milk for this recipe, you could use semi skimmed milk or even oat milk for dairy free babies.
Nutmeg - I add a pinch of nutmeg for a little extra flavour, I find it so delicious in white sauce recipes.
Bay leaf - I equally like to use a bay leaf in white sauce recipes alongside the nutmeg and black pepper, adds a fragrant taste that works so nicely with the fish.
Dijon mustard - I have added 2 teaspoons of the mustard but you can just use 1 teaspoon it is up to you how mustardy you like the sauce. My tip is to add 1 teaspoon and have a little taste to see if you would like any more.
White potato - I have used regular white potatoes for this recipe, you can use any white potatoes that you have. Or you can use a mix of white potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Onion - I have used a small onion for the white sauce as extra flavour for the fish pie which I think works really nicely.
Peas and sweetcorn - Great to have peas and sweetcorn in the freezer stash. I use these often in recipes.
Spinach - Frozen spinach is another great staple to have in the freezer, they are great for curries and stews. A great way to add in added nutrition to recipes.
Cheese - I have used mature cheddar cheese, but a Red Leicester cheese would work well too. You could add in a little extra cheese to the white sauce to make a cheese sauce too if you fancy.

Storage instructions
You can keep the fish pie in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container, so great if you would like to portion up for dinners in the week, you could use small airtight containers to do this
The fish pie can also be frozen for up to 3 months in the freezer, in airtight containers, large or small. If freezing, let the fish pie cool down to room temperature before popping in the freezer.
To defrost the fish pie, defrost in the fridge overnight, to reheat, transfer from your airtight container into an oven proof dish, pre heat the oven to 180 C or 350F and heat for 20-25 minutes and enjoy.
Once defrosted you will not be able to re freeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Pie dish - A classic enamel pie dish is great for making individual pies and crumbles.I like these enamel dishes as there is even heat distribution, which means it's easy to achieve perfect crispy pie crusts. It even has a flat edge for a classic crusty rim. Also, it is suitable for oven or stovetop use, and is 100% freezer safe and dishwasher safe
Saucepans - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
