Can Babies Have Peanut Butter Puffs

Yes, babies can eat homemade peanut butter puffs, provided they are prepared with care and consideration for age and allergies.

These soft, melt-in-the-mouth snacks are an excellent option for baby-led weaning/older children and younger kids and of course toddler snacks, as they allow little ones to explore textures and flavours without posing a choking hazard.

When making homemade peanut butter puffs, it's crucial to use natural peanut butter without added sugars or salt, and to adjust the recipe to ensure a light, airy consistency.

Always consult with health visitor if you’re worried about introducing peanuts, especially if there's a history of allergens in the family.

Once cleared, these great puffs can be a delightful and nutritious treat that introduces little tummies to the taste of peanuts in a safe way.

What Is The Best Combination With Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a delicious and nutritious option for baby-led weaning, and it pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods, an easy way to add nutrition to baby’s diet.

Smooth peanut butter can be served from 6 years of age.

One of the best combinations is peanut butter spread on thin slices of banana creating a delightful sweet and creamy texture that little ones love.

Serving smooth peanut butter with wholemeal toast or rice cakes offers a slight crunch, while also providing beneficial fibre with no added sugar either.

For added nutrition, including a sprinkle of ground flaxseed or chia seeds can enhance omega-3 fatty acids.

Just ensure that the peanut butter is smooth and free from added sugars or salt to keep it suitable for your baby.

    Allergenic Foods

When introducing allergenic solid foods during baby-led weaning (BLW), it is recommended to begin around six months of age, as long as your baby is developmentally ready to try their first foods.

Common and top allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, egg allergy, dairy, wheat, soya, fish, and shellfish. Check you have the right amount of allergens before you start weaning.

Start by offering these foods in a safe, age-appropriate format, such as peanut-containing foods/ground peanuts or smooth peanut butter spread on toast or wholegrain oatmeal blizted with breast milk and gently heated to thicken.

You will only need a small amount for it to be a safe dose. And you do not have to use organic ingredients to wean.

Baby does not need to have a diverse diet yet using diverse ingredients to start with so don’t panic.

Early peanut introduction can be a reduced risk of developing peanut allergy. If you try this later on there could be an increased risk of peanut allergy.

It is also important to check the nutritional facts/nutritional information and product information of packaged food if using before serving that they are appropriate for baby.

It’s important to introduce these foods one at a time, waiting about three days before introducing another potential allergen, to monitor for any allergic reactions.

If there is a family history of allergies within the whole family, consulting baby’s healthcare provider before introducing these foods is advisable to ensure safety.

    Ingredient information

Puff pastry - I have used a ready rolled puff pastry for convenience and to save time in the kitchen. You can roll your own pastry yourself, if you do so I would roll to a few millimetres. Puff pastry makes for such a good snack product such as these peach puffs too!

Peanut butter - I have used a smooth 100% nut butter for this recipe, you can use other smooth nut butters too if you prefer. A great way to try other smooth nut butters for baby. Peanut protein is a great vegan/plant based for baby and toddler.

Milk - I have used whole milk but you can use a dairy free alternative for dairy free babies such as oat milk or almond milk.

    Serving suggestion

The serving of puffs can be served with a plain Greek yogurt for dipping. A great type of food that can be easily customisable for baby.

You can also serve with mashed fresh strawberries or raspberries for dipping.

Other recipes you may like: Apple turnovers, Cinnamon pinwheels or Puff pastry vegetable tart.

    Storage instructions

The peanut butter puffs can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.

If you wanted to freeze the puffs, you will need to make sure that the puffs have cooled down before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.

To defrost the puffs, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted, before re heating.

To reheat, place the puffs in a oven proof dish and reheat 180C/350F for 4-5 minutes. They can be eaten at room temperature.

Once the puffs have been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.
