    Recipe For Plum Crumble

Plum crumble is a great recipe for a Sunday lunch that ensures babies are included in family meals without compromising on taste or health. This apple and plum crumble recipe features naturally sweetened, ripe plums, combined with a crumble topping made from oats and ground almonds, providing a perfect dessert without any added sugar.

Soft yet satisfying, this delicious crumble is easy for little ones to grasp and enjoy, making it a perfect treat for the whole family.

Serve it warm, and you’ll create a comforting dish that everyone, from the tiniest eaters to the adults, can enjoy together.

    Apple Crisp vs Apple Crumble

Apple crisp and apple crumble are both excellent choices for baby-led weaning, as they are naturally sweetened and contain no added sugar. The key difference between the two lies in their textures and intended uses; apple crisps are baked with a little cinnamon, making it a tasty snack option that little ones can easily grasp.

In contrast, the softer, buttery crumble topping offers a more dessert-like experience, making it perfect for a comforting treat after a meal. Both variations provide deliciously healthy ways to introduce apples to your little one's diet while enjoying the goodness of whole ingredients.

    Bramley Apples

Bramley apples are an excellent option to introduce to babies from around six months of age, provided they are cooked first. These apples are known for their soft texture when baked or stewed, making them easy for little ones to chew and digest.

Cooking Bramley apples not only enhances their sweetness but also helps to break down the fibres, which can be gentler on a baby's developing digestive system.

They are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, making them a nutritious choice for your baby's first foods. Always ensure to remove any skin and serve them in appropriately sized pieces to avoid choking hazards.

    Sugar-Free Crumble Topping

A sugar-free crumble topping perfect for baby-led weaning can be easily created using a combination of oats, ground almonds, and butter. The oats provide a wholesome base, rich in fibre, which is beneficial for your little one's digestion.

Ground almonds add a subtle nutty flavour and healthy fats, essential for growth and development. Butter lends a yummy richness while helping to bind the ingredients together, resulting in a deliciously crumbly texture.

This topping not only enhances the taste of fruits but also introduces a variety of flavours and textures, making it an excellent choice for your baby's meals.

    Ingredient information

Apples - Bramley apples are great cooking apples and are great in a crumble which is why I have chosen these fresh apples for the crumble. You could use any apple such as granny smiths but they may have a little bit of a bite when cooked.

Plums - Juicy plums are a great fruit filling and even better with Bramley apples. You could use another stone fruit such as peeled peaches or peeled apricots.

Oats - Oats are perfect ground to oat flour and used instead of plain flour. You could use plain flour but the taste of the oats are great for this recipe.

Ground almonds - I have added ground almonds for extra flavour, you can of course leave this out for nut free babies.

Cinnamon - I have added a little cinnamon, you could use a little nutmeg instead.

Butter - Unsalted butter is better to use for baby led weaning as there is no added salt.

    Serving suggestion

The apple and plum crumble would be great served with plain Greek yogurt, crème fraiche, plain natural yogurt or double cream. Apple recipes go so well with a creamy based side.

You could add raspberries to make a apple and raspberry crumble instead of the plums with the Bramley apples. Or you could add blueberries to make an apple & blueberry crumble. A great way to add a new exciting fruit in your baby’s diet.

Other recipes you may like: Apple oat crumble, Apple oat slice or Carrot cake muffin.

    Storage instructions

The plum apple crumble can be frozen. So if you did want to make a batch of the apple and plum crumble, you absolutely can.

The crumble can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Be sure to label the airtight container with the item and date.

You can store the crumble in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

If you wanted to reheat the crumble from frozen, you will need to place the crumble in the fridge in an airtight container overnight to thaw.

Pre heat the oven to 180C/350F, and heat for 20 minutes.

Once defrosted you will not be able to re freeze.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Saucepan - So many pan sets out there but I particularly like to use pans with a non-stick surface for ease of cleaning and ones that are suitable for different types of hob surface.
