    Best Cheese for Infants

    When it comes to introducing cheese to infants and babies during baby-led weaning, it is recommended to start with mild, soft cheeses such as mozzarella or mild cheddar. These cheeses are easier for babies to chew without posing a choking hazard.

    It is important to ensure that the cheese is pasteurised to reduce the risk of any harmful bacteria. As babies grow older and more accustomed to different textures, introducing slightly firmer cheeses like Swiss or Gouda can provide a variety of tastes and nutrients.

    It is always advisable to consult with a health visitor before introducing new foods to a baby's diet.

    Ingredient information

    Cheese - I have used a cheddar cheese, but you could use a grated mozzarella cheese or cream cheese too if you prefer.

    Pastry - I have used a ready rolled puff pastry for this recipe. You could use a pastry that you can roll yourself at home.

    Tomato paste - I have used tomato puree/paste, you could use a tomato sauce if you prefer.

    Paprika - I have add a little paprika for added flavour, you could leave this out or use a herb such as mixed herbs or Italian seasoning.

    Whole milk - You could use a beaten egg for an egg wash instead or milk.

    Serving suggestion

    The cheese pinwheels recipe are great if you need lunch ideas. They are great served with a tomato sauce dip or with cucumber batons and carrot batons.

    The pinwheels are great for lunch boxes or picnic days. Try using a green pesto to make pesto pinwheels too as a different option!

    Storage instructions

    The pinwheels can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.

    If you wanted to freeze the pinwheels, you will need to make sure that the pinwheels have cooled down before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.

    To defrost the pinwheels, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted, before re-heating.

    To reheat, place the pinwheels in a oven proof dish and reheat 180C/350F for 5 minutes. They can be eaten at room temperature.

    Once the pinwheels have been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.


    Equipment used to help with this recipe

    Baking tray - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.

    Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

    This is a great finger food option for baby for baby led weaning. Great for lunch boxes too!

    Ingredients

    Instructions

    1. Start by preheating your oven to 180C or 350F.
    2. Roll out the puff pastry straight from the fridge onto a baking sheet.
    3. Spread the tomato puree over the puff pastry until evenly spread.
    4. Sprinkle over the paprika and then the cheese.
    5. Start to roll the pastry length ways towards you until you have a tightly rolled piece of pastry.
    6. Using a sharp knife, cut the pastry into approx 1 inch pieces until you have 12 pieces.
    7. Lay the pinwheels out and sprinkle with cheese.
    8. Milk wash the pastry and pop into the oven for 20 minutes until golden brown.

    Notes

    You can easily make this recipe vegan and dairy free. Choose a vegan ready rolled puff pastry and a vegan cheese of your choice.

    You could add in a couple of veggies such as grated carrot and grated courgette.

    To make the recipe is gluten-free choose a gluten-free ready rolled puff pastry.
