Can Babies Eat Puff Pastry?
Babies can begin to try puff pastry in recipes after they reach 6 months of age. However, it is crucial to ensure that the pastry is fully cooked and flaky to avoid any potential choking hazards. It is advisable to introduce puff pastry gradually and in small amounts to monitor for any adverse reactions. Which is why this easy puff pastry pear tart for baby led weaning 🍐 is great!
Additionally, consider the ingredients used in the pastry to check for potential allergens that may not be suitable for the baby. Consult with a healthcare professional before introducing new foods to a baby’s diet to ensure it is appropriate for their age and development if you are worried.
Can You Use Pear Puree?
Yes, you can use pear puree for this delicious recipe. It will enhance the pear flavour in the tart and ensure a smoother texture throughout. Simply substitute an equal amount of pear puree for the sliced pears called for in the recipe.
This adjustment may require slightly altering the baking time to accommodate the moisture content of the puree. Enjoy the rich pear taste in every bite of this yummy pear tart.
Tinned Fruits For Baby
Yes, you can introduce tinned fruit in juice to babies after they reach 6 months of age. However, it is essential to ensure that the fruit does not contain added sugars or artificial sweeteners. Opt for varieties that are packed in natural fruit juice instead of syrup to minimize sugar intake.
Before offering tinned fruit to your baby, consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any allergies or digestive issues. Additionally, always check the food labels for any additives that may not be suitable for young infants. Remember to introduce new foods one at a time and monitor for any adverse reactions when incorporating tinned fruit into your baby's diet.
Ingredient information
Puff pastry - This is great for convenience, and perfect for this recipe. You could make your own pastry or use a ready to roll puff pastry.
Pears - I have used tinned pears as they are a great texture for baby-led weaning. You could poach some fresh pears or use very ripe pears instead of tinned.
Ground almonds - Pears and almonds are a great combination, so seemed a perfect addition to the recipe. You could leave this ingredient out for nut allergens.
Greek yogurt - I have used a full fat version as this is perfect for babies from 6 months old. try adding a tablespoon of cream cheese too if you like a cheesecake taste. You could use a dairy free version for dairy free babies.
Unsalted butter - You could use an egg wash instead of butter.
Serving suggestion
The tarts would be great served with a dollop of plain Greek style yogurt. You could swirl a little almond butter through the yogurt for extra flavour and protein.
Why not try adding a few mixed berries on the side such as blueberries, strawberries or blackberries.
Other recipes you may like: Cinnamon pinwheels, Peach tart or Cheese puffs.
Storage instructions
The puff pastry tart can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days, stored in an airtight container.
If you wanted to freeze the tarts, you will need to make sure that the rolls have cooled down before transferring to either a freezer bag or airtight container. Ensure that the bag/airtight container is labelled with the item and the date. I use masking tape to label the airtight container.
To defrost the tarts, leave in the fridge overnight and make sure that they are fully defrosted, before re heating.
To reheat, place the tarts in a oven proof dish and reheat 180C/350F for 5 minutes. They can be eaten at room temperature.
Once the tarts have been defrosted you will not be able to reheat or refreeze.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Baking sheet - I have chosen to use a non-stick and BPA free baking sheet - they are easy to clean and, if you buy more than one, easily stackable and easily stored.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.

Instructions
- Start by preheating the oven to 180C.

- Mix together the yogurt and ground almonds in a small bowl, and take approx a teaspoon of the yogurt in the middle of the puff pastry squares. Spread this out slightly without touching the edges.

- Pop into the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Sprinkle with a little more of the ground almonds to finish if you like.
