    Healthy Spaghetti Bolognaise

Slow cooker chicken spaghetti is a great recipe for baby led weaning and the entire family due to its nutritional benefits and ease of preparation. One of the best ways to serve meat to your baby.

Packed with protein and vitamins from the chicken and vegetables, this dish is both wholesome and delicious, making it suitable for even the youngest eaters.

The slow cooker method allows for a hands-off approach, enabling busy parents to prepare a large batch of bolognaise with minimal effort, perfect for those hectic weeknights.

Once cooked, it can be served over spaghetti or spooned onto a high chair tray for little ones to explore on their own, ensuring that mealtimes are stress-free and enjoyable for everyone.

    Best Pasta For Babies

When it comes to baby-led weaning, simple ingredients such as spaghetti is an excellent choice for little ones starting at around 6 months. Its long, thin shape makes it easy for babies to grasp, promoting self-feeding and encouraging their independence at mealtimes.

Maybe next time opt for whole grain or vegetable-infused variations to introduce a range of flavours and nutrients. Cooked until just tender, spaghetti can be served with simple sauces, such as an easy tomato sauce or a light drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, which also helps to create a playful, engaging experience for your baby as they learn to chew and swallow.

    Ingredient information

Fresh chicken mince - This recipe will work with beef mince too, use a beef zero salt stock cube and you have another great alternative dinner. Or you could use tender chicken boneless skinless chicken breasts or chicken tenders.

Passata - I have used passata you could use 2 tins of diced tomatoes or peeled plum tomatoes instead.

Onion - I have used a red onion but you could use a yellow onion if you like or a couple of shallots.

Celery - This is a great veggie to add to the chicken, great for flavour too. I chop the celery really small in line with the onion if possible. This way the texture will be the same.

Carrot - Grating veggies in recipes for baby’s and kids is great, you could grate in a few more veggies like courgette, butternut squash or even peppers.

Garlic - I have used fresh garlic cloves but you can use a garlic powder or garlic granules if you prefer.

Stock - I have used a zero salt stock cube, you can get low salt varieties too which are great for adding flavour to recipes for baby led weaning without the added salt. You could use a fresh chicken broth too if you prefer.

Onion Granules - I have added onion granules for extra flavour, you could leave this step out if you like or use an onion powder.

Oregano - You could use Italian seasoning, mixed herbs or a herb you like. Sage or thyme would work nicely too in this recipe.

Basil - I have used dried basil, but you could use fresh basil if you prefer. If you use fresh basil, stir the basil (as much as you like) through the chicken.

Tomato puree - I have used tomato puree for extra flavour and tomato taste. Really adds something to the recipe.

Black pepper - I have used a little bit of black pepper without salt for the seasoning for this recipe.

Spaghetti - You could use any spaghetti noodles you have, you could use a thin spaghetti or a linguine spaghetti which is slightly thicker. Follow the package directions to cook the spaghetti.

    Storage instructions

The slow cooker chicken spaghetti can be kept in the fridge in a freezer-safe container such as an airtight container for up to 3 days. Or you can store in airtight containers in the freezer for up to 3 months. Its best to label the freezer bag and airtight container with the item and the date. This recipe would make a great freezer meal.

To defrost the chicken, place leftovers in the fridge overnight, once fully defrosted, you can reheat the chicken.

To reheat the chicken, preheat your oven to 180C/350F and reheat in an oven proof dish covered for up to 20-25 minutes. You may need to add a splash of water to the chicken halfway through.

Once thawed and reheated you will not be able to refreeze and store again.

Equipment used to help with this recipe

Slow cooker - A slow cooker is well worth the investment. I use one that has a non-stick removable pan for ease of cleaning, and an in-built timer.

Slow cooker liners - Food safe liners, disposable and BPA free - these are a great idea for lining the slow cooker pot.

Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
