What Can I use as an Alternative To Sweet Potato
If you're looking to change up the sweet potato fritters, there are several other vegetables that can be used instead into the recipe in an easy way.
Carrots, white potato, or even butternut squash can provide natural sweetness and moisture while also adding a colourful twist to the fritters.
You can also experiment with mashed peas for a vibrant green option or incorporate finely grated beetroot for an earthy flavour and a stunning looking fritter for a healthy recipe.
The key is to maintain a balance of moisture, so consider squeezing out excess water from watery vegetables such as courgettes.
This way, you can create a variety of tasty and nutritious fritters that will keep mealtime exciting for your little one and older kids too.
Ingredient information
Sweet potato - These are a great weaning ingredient, they are sweet but can be soft enough for baby. They are a great main ingredient in this fritter recipe.
Flour - I have used self raising flour as that is what I had, but you can use plain flour or even and oat flour (rolled oats blitzed to flour) or almond flour for a slightly different taste.
Egg - I have used a medium egg for this recipe as it binds the fritters together really well. you could use an egg replacer or olive oil instead for vegan babies.
Paprika - I have added a little paprika for a little extra flavour. You could use other spices such as ground cumin or or ground coriander or onion powder or garlic powder or leave it out altogether if you prefer.
Olive oil - I have used an extra virgin olive oil to cook the fritters, you could use unsalted butter or even coconut oil, avocado oil or a good quality vegetable oil for different flavours and tastes. A great way to add in new tastes and flavours.
Serving suggestion
The sweet potato patties would be great served with shredded chicken and broccoli or cauliflower florets. You could also serve with a homemade ketchup or sour cream with a squeeze of lemon, these are a great little dipping sauce for baby and picky toddlers to make a complete meal.
You could serve the sweet potato fritters recipe alongside fish fingers or homemade chicken nuggets.
Other recipes you may like: Carrot fritters, apple fritters , sweet potato fries or broccoli fritter for baby.
Storage instructions
The fritters once cooled, can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days in between parchment paper to stop them sticking together. If you wanted to reheat the fritters, you will only be able to reheat once from the fridge.
I would suggest heating them up in the oven on a baking tray, at 180 degrees, for 15 minutes. Leave to cool before serving to your baby.
To store in the freezer, leave the fritters to cool at room temperature and store in an airtight container or in an airtight freezer bag. They can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Equipment used to help with this recipe
Frying pan - I love the non-stick surface of this particular frying pan and it’s suitable for all types of hob.
Large bowl - Definitely choose a stainless steel one - they are lighter than the stone or glass ones and very easy to clean.
Airtight container - I much prefer the click-shut lids on these containers compared to others. They are also dishwasher and freezer safe and BPA free, so very suitable for food use.
